Fireworks along with a Toast for Life: Israeli Citizens Delight at Agreement to Return Captives
The announcement of an agreement expected to result in the freeing of hostages detained within Gaza for over two years has generated delight and comfort throughout the nation.
A group which has campaigned for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza expressed “deep appreciation” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The deal—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—will see the release of 20 hostages alive and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian detainees serving life sentences in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from Gaza.
So far, 148 hostages have been returned—largely through previous ceasefire deals—51 bodies have been retrieved while eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Celebratory Moments in Hostages’ Square
Jubilant scenes have unfolded in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled ahead of the deal being signed.
The gathering started applauding and moving to music under US and Israeli flags—a female attendee displaying a sign saying: “We love Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” she expressed.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, cried as she watched the people celebrating.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We need to see them come back home to their families.”

Families Celebrate Using Pyrotechnics
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the announcement that he would be returned home.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker said while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy was palpable in the streets in Tel Aviv after the news.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari rejoiced with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then toasting “L’chaim”, meaning “for life”. She has advocated for the freedom of her friends, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You’re coming home.”
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, with her remains found in a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other hostage families in pushing for a deal which ensures the return of all those still being held within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is actually happening. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and here it is,” he said.
He said he felt “broken” that Carmel will not be among those coming back home but was “glowing with joy” for the families of the captives who are finally coming back.
Eitan Horn was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother.
Cautious Optimism from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “a dream state”.
“We are immensely thankful to President Trump and everything he has done on our behalf. It seems like it might be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan feels closer than before,” she said.
But she cautioned that it remained too soon to rejoice.
“Before the final captive is here, we won’t open the bubbly. We will continue struggling... until the end,” she affirmed.
“So many things can happen up to the final instant which is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the work and ensure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only once we have the last hostage back home.”
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling Iair, who was freed from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
