No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
